The Right Honorable the Lord Mayor

Welcome to the program for the 2008 City of Perth Winter Arts Festival, bringing together some of the most creative institutions in the state for three months of fantastic arts and culture.

Now in its fourth year, the Festival incorporates everything from ballet and history to contemporary fine art and electronic music in a three month program which highlights the diversity and world-class standards expressed by our local artists and organisations.

I believe the Winter Arts Festival stands apart from other festivals in its dedication to local artists and institutions, a real celebration of our home-grown creative industries.

In 2007, a report commissioned by the State Government and the City of Perth found our creative industries make a direct contribution of $4.6 billion to the economy, or a $10.6 billion contribution once flow-on effects to local businesses are factored in.

This study shows that the City of Perth’s commitment to creative industries and local arts organisations has not only provided us with great entertainment and a nurturing environment for new artists and art-forms, it has been a sound investment in the city and its people.

I would personally like to thank the many organisations that have joined together
for the Winter Arts Festival, and welcome you all to a fantastic season of homegrown
talent.

Ms Lisa Scaffidi
The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor

It is with great pleasure I welcome you to the 2008 City of Perth Winter Arts Festival.

For the fourth year running, the City of Perth and many of Western Australia’s leading arts and cultural organisations and landmark venues will come together under the same umbrella to spice up the Winter months of June, July and August.

Anything is possible during this year’s program - from the dynamic Wonderlust exhibition featuring the very best of the
State Art Collection, to the blossoming of the City during Art in Bloom, to the presentation of a newly ‘discovered’ baroque work by Handel.

The State Government’s support for these organisations, facilities and projects demonstrates our commitment to a vibrant and energetic city and cultural sector. Please enjoy the 2008 festival.

Hon Sheila McHale MLA
Minister for Culture and the Arts

There is no need for the winter drizzle to get you down. In fact I would argue there is probably no better place to spend winter than in Perth when the city’s beautiful backdrop will be brought to life by the colour and excitement of the Winter Arts Festival.

The Festival will be presenting the best visual art, dance, theatre and music that Perth has to offer.

So if the rain does drive you indoors make sure you head for the Concert Hall, Playhouse Theatre, the Art Gallery or one of the many other venues providing a magical treat for the senses.

I spend most mornings on radio exploring the issues and events that have Perth talking and I am very much looking forward to sampling and sharing the latest from the Winter Arts Festival with you.

So c’mon! Join me on a winter journey that will have you tingling on the outside and keep you warm on the inside!
